What should runners drink?

What should runners drink before, after or during a run?

Personally for me, I don’t like to drink any caffeine before a run as I know I am sure to use the bathroom midway! A nice glass of cold water does it for me and during runs less than an hour or so, I don’t really need any hydration. 

But if it’s an intense HIIT session where I feel my lungs bursting, I am like a person lost in a desert dying of thirst! My hydration belt does a pretty good job of taking care of my needs during long runs lasting more than an hour. 

I really feel to each his own, I have a friend who says he doesn’t need any hydration even after two hours of running and that drinking any water will give him side stitches. 

What are your drinking habits like? Do you guzzle water like there’s no tomorrow or do you go only for energy drinks?
