It just so happened that the Sunday Times published an article on standing at work

why you should stand at work

This couldn’t come at a better time. I enjoyed reading the article immensely as it conveyed what I felt. That standing at work increases productivity by stimulating creativity, improves posture and promotes a healthy lifestyle among others. But don’t take my word for it. Here are what other major publications have to say about the benefits of a standing desk.

From MashableHuffingtonpostWired.com, Yahoo.

Quote from one of them:

Scientists at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana analyzed the lifestyles of more than 17,000 men and women over about 13 years, and found that people who sit for most of the day are 54 percent more likely to die of heart attacks.

But for your benefit, I am going to list them down here at one glance:

Standing at work is good because: (compiled from Forbes and Havard Business Review)

1. More energy –  A stand-up desk encourages you to stay active throughout the day, and movement is an obvious way to do so.

2. Ergonomics – Sitting for extended periods of time is not good for posture, you tend to hunch and get sore necks, shoulders and backache as a result. Standing up works your core and helps you not to hunch.

3. You burn more calories, strengthen leg muscles and improve balance.

4. You live longer – read the science here

5. You won’t feel that sleepy and it helps you digest better after lunch!

No more excuses!

Of course I realise that you might not have access to a standing desk. I don’t in fact. I do however have a standup counter at the pantry where I’ll bring my laptop over to do my work for a few hours before returning to my desk.

I really think that even though being in an office job gives us less chances to be active, incorporating little habits can make the difference.

Do you stand at work?
